Historical studies form the cornerstone of social investigation and informed discussions about contemporary politics and culture. Our unique program connects the humanities and social sciences, equipping students with skills in conceptual precision, archival investigation, analytical thinking, and historical composition. With close ties to other departments at the New School for Social Research and various university-wide initiatives, students gain exceptional access to critical social theory and interdisciplinary partnerships.
The 30-credit MA in Historical Studies merges historical training with coursework spanning multiple disciplines at The New School for Social Research. Our interdisciplinary approach thoroughly examines diverse perspectives on global understanding.

Established in the 1980s by Charles Tilly, Louise Tilly, Aristide Zolberg, and Ira Katznelson, the Committee for Historical Studies upholds its founding principle: history's vital role in human comprehension. We maintain our dedication to exploring historical inquiries through theoretically grounded, critical frameworks.

Our curriculum spans numerous historical eras and global regions, with special emphasis on major modern transformations. Faculty specialties encompass capitalism's evolution, political history, violence studies, gender history, psychoanalysis development, social movements, and historical theory. Our varied methodologies incorporate perspectives from critical social theory. Dedicated faculty guide students in honing their scholarly, educational, and writing skills to effectively engage broad audiences.
