The Public and Urban Policy doctoral program builds upon The New School's legacy of forward-thinking social science scholarship. This program applies rigorous academic inquiry to address urgent policy matters, urban design concerns, and regional/global development needs. Students examine diverse theoretical frameworks, research methods, and analytical approaches while developing specialized expertise to tackle current and future policy issues. The PhD curriculum equips graduates for both academic careers and professional leadership positions. Alumni work as university faculty and researchers, while others assume high-level roles in policy institutes, government agencies, and nonprofit/NGO sectors.

Program graduates teach at institutions including University of Illinois at Chicago, Brooklyn College, University at Buffalo, Ohio State University, Queens College, University of California Davis, CUNY, Loughborough University, and The New School. Qualification Requirements

Applicants to the PhD in Public and Urban Policy must hold a master's degree from an accredited U.S. college or university or the equivalent degree from a foreign college or university, in addition to a bachelor's degree or its equivalent. Applicants in the process of completing their master's degree may apply for admission.
The doctoral program in Public and Urban Policy seeks applicants with academic and/or professional qualifications that prepare them for advanced research and practice in public policy analysis with an urban orientation. GRE and GMAT test scores are not required.
Complete a Statement of Purpose
Your statement of goals and purpose (1,500 words maximum) should describe your academic and professional interests and goals, explain why you want to pursue a doctorate, and tell us why our PhD in Public and Urban Policy is a good fit for you. This statement should discuss the kind of research you intend to pursue as a student and explain why this work is important for what you expect to accomplish after completing the degree. Please include a frank self-assessment of your work as a scholar. You are encouraged to discuss the importance of your work experience for your academic and career plans, especially if you have been out of school for an extended time.

Two letters of recommendation from professional and/or academic references are required. Recommendations must be submitted by recommenders directly via the online application portal. Instructions are included in the online application.
