The Public and Urban Policy doctoral program builds upon The New School's legacy of forward-thinking social science scholarship. This program applies rigorous academic inquiry to address urgent policy matters, urban design concerns, and regional/global development needs. Students examine diverse theoretical frameworks, research methods, and analytical approaches while developing specialized expertise to tackle current and future policy issues. The PhD curriculum equips graduates for both academic careers and professional leadership positions. Alumni work as university faculty and researchers, while others assume high-level roles in policy institutes, government agencies, and nonprofit/NGO sectors.
Program graduates teach at institutions including University of Illinois at Chicago, Brooklyn College, University at Buffalo, Ohio State University, Queens College, University of California Davis, CUNY, Loughborough University, and The New School. They also hold research and leadership positions at prominent organizations like MRDC's Center for Data Insights, Planned Parenthood Federation of America, Human Rights Watch, Center for Women's Policy Studies, and Center for American Progress.
