The Environmental Studies program at The New School employs a cross-disciplinary method to examine today's pressing ecological concerns and develop hands-on solutions. Our students are forward-thinking innovators driven to address modern environmental challenges, fascinated by human-environment interactions, and motivated to advance both social and ecological equity.
This program is built on the principle that multifaceted environmental issues require diverse perspectives. Participants explore human-environment connections through social, ecological, and political lenses, focusing on three core components:
Comprehensive training in natural sciences, with emphasis on urban ecosystems and adaptability
In-depth study of environmental policy and governance, especially concerning equity, racial justice, and fairness
Practical design studios focused on sustainable solutions
Students enroll in courses across Lang College, Parsons School of Design, and the Schools of Public Engagement. Through this interdisciplinary blend of liberal arts, science, policy, and design, participants combine seminar discussions with studio work, field research, and internships. This approach provides real-world experience supported by strong theoretical foundations, equipping graduates to recognize urgent urban environmental challenges and craft innovative, scientifically informed solutions that integrate knowledge from various fields.
