NMSU's history program motivates students to examine and understand historical events from diverse viewpoints while acknowledging their own contributions to historical narratives. Our studies encompass everything from personal accounts like oral histories, diaries, and letters to cultural artifacts such as songs, literature, official records, and even culinary instructions. Both bachelor's and master's students utilize primary materials, employing various analytical approaches to explore historical inquiries. The department prioritizes meticulous research alongside strong writing and communication abilities. Graduates from NMSU's history programs emerge well-prepared to succeed in multiple careers and participate actively in our evolving society. The History Department at NMSU thrives as an intellectual hub for inquisitive learners. Students have restored landmarks in downtown Las Cruces, produced historical podcasts and films, organized exhibits at the Branigan Cultural Center, and designed apps to catalog the city's mural heritage. Our Public History initiative ranks among the nation's most established programs.
