Doctoral candidates can focus on any research area actively pursued by computer science faculty. By collaborating with other doctoral departments at New Mexico State University, students may also concentrate on interdisciplinary fields like computational biology, computer networks and architectures, or cognitive science. Applicants should enter the program with qualifications matching those needed for NMSU's Master's degree in computer science. Degree requirements follow the NMSU graduate catalog, with these key additions: Passing the Ph.D. Qualifying Exam is mandatory. Students typically take this exam within their first year in the Ph.D. program or within a year after addressing any deficiencies. The exam involves both written and oral presentations synthesizing a literature review on a chosen topic. Detailed exam guidelines are available in the department's documentation. Master's students in Computer Science who complete a thesis may substitute a successful thesis defense for the qualifying exam, provided their thesis advisor agrees to supervise their Ph.D. studies. The comprehensive exam assesses specialized knowledge in the candidate's chosen research area, approved by their graduate committee. This includes: a written component featuring an in-depth survey paper and annotated bibliography, plus an oral defense. Candidates must also submit and defend a research prospectus, which may coincide with or follow the comprehensive exam. This prospectus outlines and justifies the dissertation's research focus. Additionally, Ph.D. students must complete at least one course in each of three core areas: theories, systems, and applications.
