The Department of Animal and Range Sciences provides graduate programs culminating in Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees, specializing in animal science and range science. The PhD in animal science focuses exclusively on reproductive physiology or ruminant nutrition.
To qualify as a regular graduate student, applicants must complete coursework similar to our undergraduate animal or range science curriculum, maintain a 3.0 GPA, and submit three recommendation letters.
Each doctoral candidate, in consultation with their advisor, forms a Doctoral Committee approved by the Department Head and Graduate Dean. This committee comprises five or more members:
The advisor (serving as chair) plus two additional faculty from the student's specialization area (reproductive physiology or ruminant nutrition).
One member representing a Related Area.
One member from the Research Tool Area.
Either the Related or Research Tool Area member may fulfill the Graduate Dean's Representative role.
Committee Responsibilities
Develop and submit a preliminary study plan to the Graduate Dean
Offer academic guidance throughout the program
Participate in both the comprehensive oral examination and final dissertation defense.
