Computer Science is the field dedicated to exploring both theoretical concepts and practical applications of computing. At New Mexico State University, the Department of Computer Science aims to deliver comprehensive education in fundamental computer science principles while equipping graduates for careers in research, development, and academia. Our undergraduate programs prepare students for advanced studies in computer science or careers focused on designing, building, and implementing computer systems. Degree options include an ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity, four minor tracks, and seven specialized concentrations. The B.S. program follows a traditional computer science curriculum, whereas the B.A. provides greater flexibility for combining studies with other disciplines. Designed for non-majors, the minor tracks cover specialized areas like algorithm theory, bioinformatics, computer systems, and software development. Meanwhile, concentrations allow Computer Science majors to focus on niche fields such as artificial intelligence, big data, cybersecurity, human-computer interaction, and more. Given technology's pervasive role in modern society, all NMSU students are encouraged to consider a minor or introductory computer science courses. Majors should regularly consult with advisors, referencing the latest Undergraduate Catalog for program planning.
