Our 30-credit, STEM-recognized studio program equips students with technical abilities, analytical thinking, and professional knowledge to address urban development challenges. The curriculum trains future designers to critically examine urban spaces and apply their creative skills to create positive global impact.
This intensive one-year program is designed for graduates with backgrounds in architecture, landscape architecture, urban planning, or similar fields. NJIT's Master of Urban Design (MUD) holds STEM designation (CIP Code 303301), enabling international graduates to qualify for extended OPT work authorization in the U.S.
Participants create urban planning and design solutions that transform cities into more just, environmentally responsible, and aesthetically pleasing environments.
Project scales vary from specific site interventions to district-wide transformations and visionary regional planning.
The initial semester focuses on addressing urban challenges in the New York metro area, while the second semester explores innovative urban design approaches in global contexts.
The curriculum emphasizes cutting-edge urban design practices grounded in comprehensive local analysis and awareness of worldwide urban development trends.
Through advanced methodologies, students master techniques for analyzing and representing both tangible and intangible urban factors, enabling them to design across various scales while assessing the socioeconomic and environmental implications of their proposals.
The 30-credit requirement can be completed through flexible full-time or part-time study, with potential waivers for up to 6 credits based on prior coursework. While additional electives in related fields are available, they don't contribute to the degree requirements.
