The Urban Teacher Residency offers an innovative apprenticeship-style program centered around cohort learning, designed for those passionate about teaching and urban education. Following the medical residency approach, UTR delivers hands-on classroom training under a mentor teacher, plus three years of ongoing professional development after program completion. Participants get a $44,000 stipend to assist with graduate tuition at Montclair State University during the 18-month curriculum. Successful graduates obtain dual New Jersey teaching certifications (P-3, K-6, or P-12 subject area plus TSD) and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT). UTR alumni must commit to teaching for three years in Newark or Orange Public Schools.

Qualification Requirements

The Graduate School requires the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree in order to be eligible to apply for a graduate program.
Transcript: One from each college attended.
Letters of Recommendation: Two.
A minimum TOEFL score of at least 83 on the internet-based test (iBT) or 62 on the paper-based test (pBT).
For IELTS test takers, the minimum required score is 6.5.
