Montclair State University's Counseling programs equip students with multicultural competence for diverse professional environments. The curriculum trains future counselors to serve varied populations across K-12 schools, community organizations, higher education student affairs departments, and addiction treatment centers. Coursework aligns with state licensing and certification standards. The Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor Certificate program meets all educational prerequisites specified by New Jersey's Addiction Professionals Certification Board (APCBNJ) for CADC qualification. Students also have the option to simultaneously pursue admission to the MA in Counseling program.

Qualification Requirements

The Graduate School requires the equivalent of a U.S. bachelor's degree in order to be eligible to apply for a graduate program.
Transcript: One from each college attended.
Essays/Personal Statement: Please explain your interest in the Certified Alcohol & Drug Counselor program, any relevant work (paid or volunteer), and how you might use this degree to advocate for your population of interest.
Letters of Recommendation: Beginning with the Spring 2021 semester, two letters of recommendation are required
A minimum TOEFL score of at least 83 on the internet-based test (iBT) or 62 on the paper-based test (pBT).
For IELTS test takers, the minimum required score is 6.5.
