The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Filmmaking empowers students to bring their creative and professional aspirations to life by developing observational abilities, imaginative thinking, narrative techniques, and technical expertise. As a Filmmaking student, you'll explore the world of cinema through foundational and advanced classes covering film history, scriptwriting, directing, production, audio recording, cinematography, and post-production. Our immersive conservatory approach ensures students start creating films in their first semester, progressively honing their craft by producing original works annually. In their final year, students create thesis-level projects that serve as professional portfolio pieces. The curriculum also covers essential industry knowledge including film financing, promotion, and distribution. Small class sizes allow for personalized instruction from working filmmakers who teach using state-of-the-art equipment and current industry practices. Students gain practical experience through internships and cooperative education programs.
At its core, filmmaking is storytelling. The BFA in Filmmaking at Montclair State University places visual narrative at the heart of its curriculum. Our rigorous, conservatory-style program provides students with a strong grounding in storytelling principles. We believe every film professional - whether producer, director, cinematographer, production designer, lighting technician, or editor - must master the art of compelling storytelling.
