The Linguistics Department is excited to introduce a new four-year bachelor's program focusing on ASL-English Interpretation: a Bachelor of Arts in Linguistics with an ASL-English Interpreting specialization.
Human communication universally relies on language as its most sophisticated system. This vital tool underpins all social interactions while shaping the growth and continuity of communities, traditions, and human advancement. However, numerous mysteries remain regarding language acquisition, neural processing, organization, and application - areas linguistics actively investigates. As the systematic examination of natural human communication, linguistics provides crucial insights into human nature, making it a fundamental component of liberal arts studies. This expansive discipline explores cognitive and social dimensions, with researchers analyzing both universal language principles and individual tongues. Scholars examine contemporary, historical, and at-risk languages through diverse methods - from academic instruction to computational analysis, psychological experiments, speech research, global fieldwork, and interpretation environments.
