Along with classes covering American, British, and global literature, the English Department provides a film studies program focused on cinema's historical development, artistic qualities, and theoretical frameworks. Film classes can fulfill various English major requirements, including those related to genre studies, international perspectives, and examinations of race, class, and gender portrayals. As part of their English degree, students can examine diverse filmmakers, styles, cinematic movements, national film traditions, and historical eras.
English majors especially interested in the relationship between film and literature may choose to specialize in film studies. This 12-credit concentration enables students to investigate the artistic connections between cinema, theater, poetry, and prose. Studying both film and literature provides students with a broader perspective on contemporary cultural evolution and representational issues.
