The need for skilled professionals who can address the multifaceted issues affecting modern children and families continues to grow, particularly for those without proper access to education, healthcare, and essential resources. The Child Advocacy and Policy program offers students a multidisciplinary approach combining psychology, social work, and legal studies to equip graduates for careers supporting at-risk youth and families.
Coursework covers key topics such as: Child maltreatment, protective services, and welfare systems, Inequities and biases in social services, Trauma-focused interventions, Transitioning from foster care, and Combating child exploitation.
All participants also undertake a hands-on internship, gaining invaluable practical experience that enhances their employability. Students engage with industry experts while receiving career preparation and mentorship. This program arms graduates with specialized expertise to advocate for children's welfare across diverse environments—from social services and healthcare to education, law enforcement, anti-trafficking efforts, and community organizations. Alumni typically find employment in nonprofits, government agencies, schools, or municipal programs. Alongside the major, the department provides minors in both Child Advocacy and Policy and Social Work.
