The general anthropology major, leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree, equips students for graduate studies and careers in academia, museum curation, research, or various professional fields. This flexible program offers a solid liberal arts foundation that can be tailored to diverse career aspirations. Practical experience is available through internship programs. Additionally, students can combine Anthropology with Elementary Education Certification to qualify for teaching positions in New Jersey public schools for kindergarten through sixth grade.
Starting Fall 2021, the innovative 4 PLUS 1 program allows Anthropology undergraduates to begin graduate-level coursework in Sustainability Sciences during their senior year. This accelerated pathway enables students to work toward both a BA in Anthropology and an MS in Sustainability Science within five years. During the first three years, students follow the standard undergraduate curriculum, then apply to The Graduate School in their junior year for admission to the MS program.
In their fourth year, participants complete 12 credits of graduate-level "swing courses" that count toward both degrees. The fifth year is dedicated to completing the remaining 20 graduate credits for the MS degree. Students who don't meet program requirements or choose not to continue after four years will receive their BA in Anthropology. Successful completion of all five years results in dual degrees: a BA in Anthropology and an MS in Sustainability Science.
