To earn a Ph.D. in History, students must complete 66 credits beyond their bachelor's degree, including 18 credits of History 690: Doctoral Thesis.
Those admitted with an approved M.S. degree may transfer up to 30 relevant credits from their prior graduate work. The combined M.A./Ph.D. pathway, outlined in the History Graduate Handbook, allows students with a B.A. to earn both degrees sequentially, typically spanning five years.
Recommended coursework includes History 503 (Pre-1860 American History for U.S. specialists), History 505 (Post-1860 U.S. History), History 512 (World History Topics), and History 540 (Historical Methods).
Students must have Masters degree
English proficiency scores (at or above): TOEFL [80] or IELTS [level 7], necessary for applicants who are not U.S. citizens and not from countries where English is the official language. This requirement is waived if the applicant has earned an undergraduate or graduate degree from an institution in the U.S.
