The Bachelor of Arts in Music program focuses on musical education within a comprehensive liberal arts curriculum. The School of Music additionally provides a non-teaching minor option. All music program applicants must audition with the relevant instrumental or vocal faculty either before or during their initial semester. Enrollment in MUSI 195 (Applied Music) is exclusively at the discretion of the applied music professor. Those with minimal experience on their primary instrument must acquire fundamental training and music literacy, potentially needing to complete MUSI 102 to meet the prerequisites for applied study and MUSI 195 eligibility. Once admitted, music majors must maintain continuous Applied Music enrollment throughout their academic tenure. Progress to higher levels requires successful jury evaluations and instructor consent. Students must perform a solo recital before advancing to MUSI 395, with at least one semester of MUSI 395 completion mandatory for graduation. Both BA students and applied music students must engage in the School's ensemble programs (band, choir, or orchestra), with approved groups detailed in the Music Major Handbook.
