The History Department provides a Master of Arts program with concentrations in U.S., European, Latin American, African, Asian, or World History. Students can opt for either a thesis-based or non-thesis track. Participants select both a primary and secondary focus area. The primary specialization must be chosen from these disciplines: U.S., European, Latin American, Asian, African, or World History. Thesis students may select their secondary emphasis from another historical field or a thematic subject tied to a specific region or historical trend. Additionally, students may pursue a minor outside history, requiring at least nine semester hours.
Thesis candidates must also show competency in one research technique, which could involve foreign language reading ability, quantitative methods, or another relevant skill approved by their graduate committee. The non-thesis option caters to those aiming for secondary education careers or seeking comprehensive historical knowledge for various purposes. Non-thesis students must choose a secondary emphasis from a different geographic region than their primary focus. Unlike the thesis track, the non-thesis program doesn't mandate research skill demonstration.
