The Doctor of Philosophy in Computer Science cultivates experts qualified to head research teams, conduct high-level industrial research, or teach advanced computer science. Applicants can enter directly with a bachelor's degree or join after completing a master's program. This curriculum serves both on-campus students in Starkville and synchronous online learners (for those admitted with a master's only).
The Ph.D. in Computer Science requires 63 credits, typically finished within four years by full-time students. Those holding a prior master's degree may transfer credits, reducing their course load. Under the guidance of a faculty advisor and committee, candidates will choose core subjects, specialization areas, and electives while developing their research projects. Research readiness is assessed through examinations, culminating in a dissertation defense presented to academic peers.
