The College of Arts and Sciences acknowledges that students often have academic interests spanning multiple disciplines, some of which may not be officially offered at MSU. For those wishing to combine studies across different fields, the Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Arts (BALA) provides an opportunity to create an interdisciplinary major within the College of Arts and Sciences.
Students seeking a multidisciplinary approach can pursue a B.A. in General Liberal Arts. To qualify for this degree, students must: fulfill all University General Education and College Core requirements, meet the College of Arts & Sciences B.A. standards, gain approval for their proposed G.L.A. program, and successfully complete 12 credit hours of upper-level courses (numbered 3000 or higher) in three distinct academic areas, all with grades of C or better. While typically all three fields come from the College of Arts & Sciences, one may be from another university school/college if relevant to the student's objectives. Early consultation with the program advisor is strongly recommended to plan degree progression carefully. Additionally, enrollment requires approval from both the GLA Committee and the College of Arts & Sciences Associate Dean. This program isn't designed for undecided students, who should instead refer to the Undecided options in the Academic Affairs section.
