The United States Bureau of Labor Statistics forecasts a 6% growth in Public Relations jobs between 2018 and 2028. In today's landscape, maintaining a positive public image has become increasingly crucial for organizations. Our program teaches students how to develop strategic messaging that fosters understanding and creates win-win relationships between organizations and their audiences. These entities range from Fortune 500 companies and non-profits to celebrity brands, healthcare providers, government agencies, and educational institutions.
As our most popular department concentration with around 250 students, we combine academic theory with hands-on practice to cultivate essential skills in critical analysis, research, strategic development, objective setting, creative problem-solving, and compelling written and verbal communication. Graduates pursue careers in media strategy, crisis management, social media coordination, sports and entertainment PR, government affairs, and executive leadership.
Our students have completed internships with organizations like MSU Athletics, Walt Disney World, Coca-Cola, U.S. Congress offices, local television stations, and community nonprofits. Additionally, students can gain practical experience through our student-led Public Relations and Integrated Student Media (PRISM) agency, where they design and implement communication campaigns for local businesses. Previous PRISM clients have included the MSU Center for Community Engaged Learning, Mercedes-Benz of Tuscaloosa, and the Stennis Center for Public Service.
