Anthropology examines humanity through both biological and cultural lenses. This discipline encompasses several specialties: archaeology, biological anthropology, cultural anthropology, and linguistics. Anthropology majors typically explore all four areas, with AMEC providing focused tracks in archaeology, cultural anthropology, and biological anthropology.
As an exceptionally versatile major, anthropology prepares graduates for diverse careers with research institutions, museums, government agencies (such as transportation departments and the National Park Service), and international humanitarian organizations, among other fields.
The Anthropology department operates from the Cobb Institute of Archaeology, which also hosts additional archaeology experts specializing in Middle Eastern and Southeastern U.S. studies. The facility features specialized spaces including archaeology labs, a darkroom, drafting areas, and the Lois Dowdle Cobb Museum of Archaeology. This museum displays artifacts from Mississippi and the Middle East, along with full-scale reproductions of ancient Assyrian and Egyptian sculptures and reliefs.
