The Department of Mathematics and Statistics provides four master's degree options: Mathematics MA, Mathematics and Statistics MS, Applied Statistics MS, and Mathematics Education MS. The Mathematics MA program features three focus areas: a comprehensive mathematics curriculum, combined mathematics and computer science studies, and mathematics with a specialization in community college instruction.
With around twenty-four faculty members, nearly all holding doctorates in mathematics, statistics, or mathematics education, the department serves approximately 30 graduate students annually. Faculty expertise spans numerous areas including abstract algebra, computational mathematics, matrix theory, complex analysis, discrete mathematics, dynamical systems, K-12 mathematics education, differential and symplectic geometry, industrial applications, mathematical biology, numerical methods, optimization techniques, partial differential equations, functional and real analysis, applied statistics, Bayesian methods, mathematical statistics, time series analysis, survival analysis, stochastic processes, actuarial science, topology, big data, and data analytics.
Program alumni have secured positions across diverse industries such as software development, graphic design, insurance, community college and secondary education, as well as roles in statistics and data science. Some graduates have pursued doctoral studies in mathematics or statistics.
