Criminal Justice is a field focused on maintaining and defending social order within democratic societies. It incorporates fundamental values like democratic governance, legal principles, constitutional rights, individual freedoms, and protecting people from threats and injustice. The Criminal Justice program, built upon the University's liberal arts foundation, equips students for advanced studies or professional roles in this field. Alumni are anticipated to pursue ongoing growth in diverse real-world environments. Four key developmental areas form the framework for this educational approach.
The Criminal Justice Department dedicates itself to delivering an excellent liberal arts education. Students will develop awareness of their responsibilities as future criminal justice practitioners and engaged community members. As an institution within the public university system, the Department also prioritizes community service. The undergraduate core curriculum cultivates essential skills for success in criminal justice careers and civic life. These competencies include: effective verbal and written communication skills; quantitative reasoning and logical analysis capabilities; understanding of scientific methodologies and contributions; cultural awareness through artistic expression; recognition of diversity's importance and fundamental human values in sustaining liberty; comprehension of societal political structures and America's federal system; awareness of individual roles within families, communities, and organizations; ethical decision-making skills; and personal development across physical, social, and psychological dimensions.
