We appreciate your interest in the MSU Mass Communication Department. Home to approximately 140 majors, our department strikes the perfect balance - large enough to provide diverse opportunities while maintaining a close-knit community. Faculty members maintain an open-door policy, ready to assist students with academic guidance, scholarship opportunities, career advice, and other needs. Our students consistently earn recognition in prestigious competitions like the Texas Intercollegiate Press Association, Broadcast Education Association, and Collegiate Broadcasting Inc. Graduates pursue successful careers not just in traditional media sectors like television, journalism, and public relations, but also in diverse fields including management, education, legal professions, and marketing. Our alumni include Pulitzer Prize winners and graduates of top-tier graduate programs.
The 39-credit major curriculum offers comprehensive training across multiple disciplines, covering advertising, journalism, broadcasting, and interpersonal communication. The program culminates with Senior Production, where student teams create original 12-15 minute documentaries. Additionally, students select an 18-credit minor to specialize in areas like journalism, broadcasting, advertising/public relations, or digital media.
An essential component of our program is the required professional internship. Students have flexibility in selecting internships that align with their interests and career goals across various industries. These opportunities span television production, social media management, graphic design, radio broadcasting, newspaper journalism, sports information, advertising, marketing, and non-profit work.
