Human activity has significantly altered vast portions of Earth's surface. Applied ecology investigates and tackles environmental issues while developing remedies. We monitor, assess, and adjust. Our goal is to find ways to rehabilitate and maintain global ecosystems. While focusing on the temperate deciduous forests near Lake Superior, we also examine how climate, plant communities, and carbon processes interact in peatland environments.
Graduate students in our applied ecology program research glacier recession, aquatic and shoreline plant life, and utilize worldwide networks of forested, agricultural, and metropolitan areas as living laboratories. They simulate greenhouse gas emissions, monitor carbon flow, and conduct in-depth studies to comprehend and reduce crucial climate impacts between human populations and their environments.
