The Department of Fisheries and Wildlife provides both thesis and non-thesis Master of Science (M.S.) options along with a Doctoral (Ph.D.) program in Fisheries and Wildlife.
Our graduate program stands at the forefront nationally for preparing fisheries and wildlife professionals in research, management, education, extension services, and consulting. Master's graduates secure positions across local, state, and federal agencies, private companies, museums, zoos, nature centers, tribal groups, and environmental consulting firms. Ph.D. holders often join university faculties or obtain competitive roles beyond academia. Around 100 graduate students are currently enrolled, with most receiving financial support through graduate assistantships.
Student research covers various aspects of limnology, fisheries, and wildlife, including human interactions. These studies utilize advanced computing resources, an exceptional library, university research facilities, and Michigan's abundant natural environments. Students also participate in global research initiatives, sharing findings with diverse audiences at regional, national, and international levels. Each student's curriculum is tailored to their academic background, interests, and professional aspirations. While programs differ, all Fisheries and Wildlife M.S. degrees aim to develop expertise in specialized areas, provide broad complementary knowledge, and establish a strong foundation for careers in administration, research, and resource management.
