The Master of Science in Data Science program equips students with a comprehensive foundation combining statistics, computer science, and computational mathematics, enabling them to effectively manage, analyze, and derive meaning from complex datasets. Michigan State University's innovative MS in Data Science (MSDS) represents a joint initiative between the College of Engineering and College of Natural Science, bringing together expertise from three key departments: Computational Mathematics, Science and Engineering (CMSE), Computer Science and Engineering (CSE), and Statistics and Probability (STT).
This program develops professionals capable of meeting future workplace challenges through data-informed decision making. As a growing interdisciplinary field, data science focuses on deriving practical knowledge from information by applying principles from statistics, computational mathematics, computer science, and information theory. Our MSDS delivers rigorous instruction in modern data analysis techniques and computational approaches. The curriculum emphasizes fundamental concepts, ensuring students grasp not just the application of current methodologies, but also their theoretical foundations, proper usage contexts, and the ability to create customized solutions for unique industry challenges.
