This program aims to address the growing global demand for English as a Second Language (ESL) instructors. Along with fulfilling the university's standards, as well as those of the College of Arts and Letters and the Department of Linguistics, Languages and Cultures, our program provides hands-on teaching experience. Students gain practical skills through team-teaching opportunities in community ESL programs and microteaching exercises in various courses. Our curriculum provides comprehensive TESOL training, featuring assignments that prepare students for professional careers in this field.

Qualification Requirements

All Official Transcripts. Bachelor Degree is required for Admission.
Applicants should have a four-year degree and a strong undergraduate record, particularly in courses taken during the last two years of study. It is advisable for students to have taken some coursework in a related field as an undergraduate, but it is not required.
Applications to the MA TESOL program are submitted online. Note: The application form will ask you if you are interested in a graduate assistantship. Applicants who are accepted by the TESOL program and are interested in an assistantship will be considered for opportunities that may become available within the Department of Linguistics and Languages but these opportunities are very limited.
Students are generally only admitted for the fall semester, but if you wish to start in the spring semester, please contact the TESOL Director. No funding is available to students starting in the spring.
Applicants should have their materials submitted by the end of January and no later than the end of March to be considered for the following fall semester. Those who are planning to apply for a teaching assistantship with the English Language Center must submit their application materials to the TESOL program by no later than mid January.
There is no provisional or conditional admission.
Below you will find links for domestic students and international students. You will be asked for a personal statement and an academic statement as well as three names for letters of reference. You may start the application even if these materials are not ready.
We prefer to have domestic students take the GRE as they can make you more competitive for funding. If this is a hardship, however, please contact the TESOL Director.
All applicants whose first language is not English, even those with a degree from an English-language institution, must provide English language competency scores.

For the TOEFL, the following minimum scores are strongly recommended: 100 on the internet-based test (iBT) with no subscore below 22, 250 on the computer-based test, or 600 on the paper-based test. The iBT is strongly preferred.
For the IELTS, an overall minimum score of 7.0 is recommended (6.5 is required by MSU), with no subscore below 6.5.
The test scores must be valid for up to two years prior to the beginning of the enrollment semester.
To be admitted to the program on regular status, an applicant must have:

a baccalaureate degree in English or another languageoriented field.
a cumulative gradepoint average of at least 3.25 for the baccalaureate degree program.
