The Hispanic Cultural Studies Ph.D. program equips students with expertise in the literatures, languages, and cultures of Spanish-speaking regions. Participants choose both primary and secondary focus areas, with options to specialize in interdisciplinary studies. This doctoral program in Hispanic Cultural Studies provides comprehensive training in Hispanic literary traditions, linguistics, and cultural frameworks. Enrolled students will designate principal and secondary concentrations, with opportunities to pursue interdisciplinary approaches, comparative literature studies, or Romance languages and literatures.

Qualification Requirements

All Official Transcripts. TOEFL PBT - 550. TOEFL IBT - 80. IELTS - 6.5.
Degree of Master of Arts with a Major in Spanish, Hispanic Studies, Spanish Philology, or equivalent, depending on the desired specialization.
GPA of 3.25 or more (or equivalent) in Spanish languages, literature and culture MA coursework.
Academic writing sample in Spanish.

Transcript and degrees or diplomas: Request that all colleges or universities attended, or examination boards send original or attested copies of all transcripts, diplomas, mark sheets, and certificates directly to Michigan State University in an official, sealed envelope.
Statement of purpose (500 words)
English Language proficiency. Prospective graduate students who are not native speakers of Spanish must demonstrate adequate proficiency in the language they will teach, before being awarded an assistantship. The language director or another faculty member will interview candidates by phone.
International Students and/or prospective graduate students who are not native speakers of English must take the TOEFL test and receive a minimum score of 550 on the paper-based version or 213 on the computer-based version of the test.
International students must also pass an oral proficiency test in English upon their arrival at Michigan State University.
