MSU's Department of Economics offers a premier PhD program that consistently ranks among the top 25-35 economics departments nationwide. The 2016 IDEAS Research Papers in Economics (RePEC) ranked MSU as the 23rd best US economics program, while our 2006-2015 publication record placed us 29th in the Tilburg Rankings. Our program excels in specialized fields, with econometrics (12th), international trade (13th), public economics (22nd), and labor economics (23rd) earning particularly strong recognition in the 2016 RePEC rankings. We believe exceptional education stems from rigorous theoretical and econometric training combined with close faculty collaboration. To enhance these opportunities, we've implemented key improvements: boosting first-year funding, reducing TA workloads, expanding RA positions, maintaining intimate field course sizes, encouraging cohort collaboration, and replacing field exams with research milestones. Our graduates leave MSU equipped with vital research skills, methodologies, and professional connections for career success. Recent placements include academic positions at institutions like University of Louisville, UC Riverside, and UNC Chapel Hill, as well as roles with leading organizations such as the Census Bureau, USDA, Mathematica, Abt Associates, and Amazon.
