Journalism degree programs equip students with skills for careers in traditional, modern, and evolving media through coursework and hands-on experience. The practical curriculum blends classroom instruction, real-world practice, and team-based projects with research initiatives and specialized centers, allowing students to address contemporary challenges. Learners gain comprehensive knowledge while specializing in particular domains. Visual storytelling through infographics plays a significant role in modern journalism. Often, a well-designed infographic can convey intricate concepts more effectively than text alone. These visual tools take multiple forms - including charts, maps, diagrams, and other formats - to illustrate trends (like demographic shifts), regional developments (such as cannabis legalization across states), or step-by-step processes (for instance, emergency aircraft evacuation procedures).
Infographics serve as either alternatives or complements to written content. Aspiring visual journalists are invited to join the global Society of News Design student chapter, hosted by MSU's Journalism School.
