Middle Childhood licensure programs are tailored to address the evolving educational requirements of students in late elementary through early high school (grades 4-9). These programs bridge the gap between the self-contained elementary classroom model and the subject-focused approach of high school curricula. As a Middle Childhood Education major, you'll focus on two specialized areas out of four options: language arts, mathematics, science, or social studies, while also earning certification to teach reading within your designated grade range. The program offers hands-on classroom experience starting early in your academic journey. During your first year, you'll gain initial teaching exposure through school visits. The second year features a concentrated course block with substantial time allocated to two distinct classroom environments. In your third year, you'll engage in teaching methodology courses that include a quarter-term placement in schools, collaborating directly with educators. The culmination comes in your fourth year with a full-semester student teaching internship, supported by regular visits from a Miami University supervisor.
Educators need expertise in diverse areas including learner development, school and community dynamics, evaluation methods, instructional strategies, legal considerations, data analysis, technology integration, curriculum design, and educational materials. The professional education curriculum explores these topics while providing immersive experiences across various school settings. Throughout this sequence, you'll progressively spend more time working alongside veteran teachers in urban, suburban, and rural schools. Your responsibilities will expand from assisting individual learners to eventually managing entire classrooms.
