Spanish serves as the official language across 19 nations spanning four continents, ranking as the world's fourth most widely spoken language. Los Angeles has become the globe's second-largest city with Spanish speakers. Across various U.S. regions, Spanish is utilized in educational institutions, legal proceedings, commerce, and everyday activities. Within coming years, over 35% of Americans will claim Spanish as their native tongue. Our connections with Latin America keep strengthening, with U.S. trade expanding more rapidly in the Americas than elsewhere globally during recent years. Given Spanish's rising significance nationwide, career prospects for Spanish majors have never been more diverse or promising. Alumni find employment in Latin American business ventures, legal practices serving Hispanic communities, and as healthcare providers, social researchers, educators, athletic trainers, and police officers. Some pursue advanced degrees, with Miami's prestigious Spanish MA program now featuring a five-year combined BA/MA track for exceptional undergraduates who can apply during their junior year.
The Spanish major curriculum includes language proficiency classes alongside studies in Latin American and Iberian literature and linguistics. These offerings provide comprehensive exposure to Hispanic language and culture, spanning from medieval works like El Cid to Cervantes, Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, and modern authors including García Lorca, Borges, Isabel Allende, Rosario Castellanos, and García Márquez.
Students examine topics within their cultural and historical frameworks, with courses organized in thematic clusters. A class on Spanish Civil War literature, for instance, incorporates artistic, historical, and cinematic elements alongside literary texts. Linguistics courses explore language's cultural dimensions, second-language learning, regional dialects, and related fields.
Qualified students can earn credits via advanced placement tests (department consultation recommended). The program also offers honors recognition, multiple scholarships, and writing awards.
Beyond academics, the Spanish and Portuguese Department organizes cultural events where students can connect with peers and faculty while deepening their linguistic and cultural understanding. These include film screenings, expert talks, and social gatherings for the campus community.
