The Master of Science degree in Earth and Planetary Science, Atmospheric Science, or Climate Physics and Chemistry follows the General Degree Requirements outlined in Graduate Education. Each student develops a customized study and research plan tailored to their unique background, objectives, and aspirations. This academic roadmap is carefully designed through collaboration between the student, their faculty advisor, and a departmental committee. No foreign language proficiency is required for this degree.
The two-year master's program is ideal for driven individuals holding bachelor's degrees in geoscience, physics, chemistry, mathematics, or engineering. The first year focuses on coursework, while the second year emphasizes research and thesis development. This curriculum equips graduates for professional roles in scientific research, environmental management, natural resource sectors, and technical consulting fields.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
The minimum score required for the IELTS is 7 and the minimum score for TOEFL is 100 (iBT) 600 (PBT).
