The most advanced academic qualification is either the Doctor of Science or Doctor of Philosophy (these titles are essentially equivalent). This prestigious degree is granted after completing an intensive course of study and producing substantial innovative research, design, or developmental work. Doctoral programs are available across all disciplines taught by the department's faculty members.
Prospective doctoral students qualify by successfully completing rigorous doctoral entrance examinations. The curriculum consists of primary coursework in the student's chosen specialization along with supplementary studies in a secondary field. The MechE Graduate Office can provide specific information regarding qualifying examination deadlines.
The cornerstone of the doctoral program is the dissertation. This substantial original work must represent a meaningful advancement through research, development, or design in its respective field. Students complete their dissertation and coursework under the guidance of a faculty advisor and a doctoral committee, which may include additional interested professors. This committee annually reviews the candidate's advancement and ultimately approves the final public presentation of the research. While most doctoral programs require three years of study beyond a master's degree, the actual duration varies significantly depending on the research subject.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
