The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science allows eligible MIT undergraduates to pursue one of three Master of Engineering (MEng) options. These programs involve an extra year of study following completion of one of the department's Bachelor of Science degrees. PhD candidates must actively engage in the department's academic activities while producing thesis research that advances their field. MIT students in the MEng program for Electrical Engineering and Computer Science must successfully finish this program first. Applicants with external bachelor's degrees but no master's qualification typically need to fulfill the Master of Science requirements, including a thesis. Those holding a non-research master's degree from another institution must complete research equivalent to a master's thesis before advancing to doctoral studies.
To be admitted as a regular graduate student, an applicant must have earned a bachelor’s degree or its equivalent from a college, university, or technical school of acceptable standing. Students in their final year of undergraduate study may be admitted on the condition that their bachelor’s degree is awarded before they enroll at MIT.
