The HASTS program is a PhD initiative offered by MIT's School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. Scholars in this program engage with cutting-edge research at one of the globe's foremost institutions focused on science and technology. Being among MIT's most competitive graduate offerings, HASTS delivers intensive academic preparation that equips students to shape the evolution of their chosen disciplines. Each HASTS candidate produces an original doctoral thesis following extensive research. These scholarly endeavors span multiple disciplines and reflect each researcher's unique passions—ranging from examining data center cultures to mapping pharmaceutical supply networks.
Students with an undergraduate degree from any academic discipline are invited to apply, as long as they have a core interest in science and technology in their historical or social dimension. The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) is required; specific subject GRE exams are not required. GRE scores are accepted up to five years after the exam was taken.
