The five-year joint degree programs combine a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Science and Engineering, or Physics with a Master of Science in Nuclear Science and Engineering. These programs cater to students who determine early in their undergraduate studies that they want to earn a graduate degree in nuclear science and engineering. Applicants must apply during their junior year's second semester and meet the department's graduate admission criteria. MIT typically expects undergraduates seeking admission to the five-year program to have an overall GPA of at least 4.3, along with a robust background in mathematics, science, and engineering with a minimum GPA of 4.0 in these subjects.
The first-year application is intended for students who have concluded their secondary education and wish to pursue a bachelor’s degree as a full-time university student.
