The Asian and Asian Diaspora Studies Major prepares students for in-depth exploration of Asian languages, history, politics, and cultures, as well as diasporic communities. This program covers nations across Asia including Bangladesh, China, India, Japan, Korea, Mongolia, Pakistan, the Philippines, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Working with their advisor, students can concentrate on specific Asian sub-regions, diaspora communities, or develop comparative studies across different areas and cultures. The curriculum aims to deliver a well-rounded education combining language studies with humanities and social sciences, while fostering regional comparative analysis. MIT's Global Studies and Languages, History, and Political Science departments provide numerous Asia-related courses. Every Interdisciplinary Major student completes a senior thesis on a self-selected topic, developed with guidance from an MIT faculty expert in Asian studies. Thesis work may incorporate Asian language proficiency.
