Since the degree plan offers considerable flexibility, students must thoughtfully organize their coursework to align with their individual goals. The department encourages personal artistic vision and self-direction, which is why there are no predefined concentrations.
The general fine arts major consists of foundational courses at the sophomore, junior, and senior levels, along with electives divided into two groups. The first group comprises seven fine arts courses (21 credits), while the second allows for greater freedom, offering four electives (12 credits) from any studio discipline.
Within the GFA program, students work across mediums—combining drawing with painting, or integrating video, performance, and text. Yet, despite these interdisciplinary possibilities, the curriculum emphasizes strong foundational training in traditional techniques.
