Visionary leaders like Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., Aung San Suu Kyi, Nelson Mandela, Dorothy Day, and Abdul Ghaffar Khan began as everyday individuals inspired by transformative movements. As a peace studies student, you'll develop into a catalyst for meaningful progress by examining the principles and application of nonviolent activism, human rights advocacy, and conflict mediation. Issues of equity and harmony influence every aspect of society. Through interdisciplinary coursework spanning political science, sociology, history, anthropology, theology, psychology, philosophy, and beyond, you'll investigate peacebuilding across three dimensions: individual (beliefs and ethics), communal (connections among people, cultures, and nations), and structural (engagement with political, economic, and social frameworks). Our evolving global landscape is being reshaped by both worldwide integration and peaceful protest movements. Consider this: between 1900 and 2006, 83 nonviolent movements worldwide successfully achieved governmental reform or independence from foreign powers. During this period, nonviolent efforts succeeded 78% of the time, versus just 38% for armed struggles. Current trends indicate that nonviolent transformation will keep reshaping societies - and you'll witness this historic shift firsthand.
The peace studies program sharpens your analytical abilities while channeling your innovation toward addressing global challenges.
