The lighting design and technology program within the Diederich College's Department of Digital Media and Performing Arts is expanding and evolving. With generous support from the Alvin and Marion Birnschein Foundation and the Evan P. and Marion Helfaer Foundation, the Helfaer Theatre has received a comprehensive lighting system overhaul, featuring cutting-edge technology. The upgraded setup includes brand-new ETC lighting control systems, Ocean Optics Seachangers, and Robe Colorspot intelligent fixtures, replacing all previous equipment.
This upgrade ensures students receive authentic practical training in lighting. They take on roles as electricians, master electricians, assistant designers, and lighting designers for departmental productions. Student designers, mentored by faculty, lead most productions, honing their skills to produce visually stunning, artistically ambitious, and dramatically fitting lighting designs. Our students' work has earned multiple KCACTF Certificate of Merit awards, and many alumni now work with prominent theater and dance companies in Chicago, New York, and Hollywood.
