The history program delves into all facets of human existence - governance, financial systems, belief systems, societal challenges, and creative expression. It's an exploration of what makes us human and the intricate nature of our collective story. Studying history cultivates analytical thinking about bygone eras, current times, and what lies ahead. The department offers two distinct tracks: general history and military history. Ambitious learners can pursue the accelerated five-year combined Bachelor's/Master's program. Those who study history constantly examine the foundations of our modern world. No matter the topic, location, or time period, historical study teaches you to probe beneath appearances and grasp underlying causes. The majority of Marquette's history students complement their degree with another field like Political Science, Business Administration, Education, Media Studies, Global Relations, or Legal Studies. History students can specialize in specific nations, geographic areas, or thematic concentrations. All students develop international perspectives through required advanced coursework covering American, European, and either African, Asian, or Latin American histories, alongside diverse introductory offerings. Numerous history students participate in international study, including faculty-directed programs (recent destinations include South Africa, Cuba, and Guatemala). History scholars aim to comprehend past events within their original contexts. Graduates emerge better equipped to navigate multifaceted situations and appreciate diverse viewpoints, having examined varied historical narratives and their associated debates while continuously expanding their understanding.
