The MEd in Secondary Education is a one-year graduate program designed to equip you for teaching high school students. Whether you aspire to teach in Chicago, another urban center, or a rural setting, you'll develop the hands-on abilities and ethical foundation needed to guide young people during their pivotal developmental years. Through Loyola University Chicago's deep connections with local schools, this immersive program places you in real Chicago classrooms from the start, allowing you to learn from experienced educators while immediately impacting students' lives. This 36-credit, field-intensive master's program holds accreditation from both the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) and the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE).
You'll apply educational theories and research-based methods to inform classroom decisions, using data to shape instruction and evaluate learning outcomes. The program also provides significant experience working with diverse student groups, including English language learners, and offers the chance to obtain secondary teaching certifications in these disciplines: Biology, Chemistry, Physics, English, Mathematics, History, Political Science, and Psychology.

Please note that the Mathematics content area has a 2.5 minimum GPA requirement, whereas all other content areas have a 3.0 minimum GPA requirement.
Statement of Purpose Details
Your statement should be 2-3 pages (double spaced) and describe your academic and professional experience, plans and goals for this program and upon completion of graduate coursework, and your perspective on social justice as it applies to being a high school teacher. Please clearly indicate your content area of choice (Biology, Chemistry, English, Mathematics, Physics, or Social Studies). You should also include why you are a good fit for Loyola University Chicago's Teaching, Learning, and Leading with Schools and Communities program.
Applicants must submit official transcripts for all undergraduate and any graduate work. To be eligible for admission, your transcript must show an earned bachelor's degree or a bachelor's degree in progress. Certified copies of transcripts are acceptable, faxed copies of transcripts are not considered official. If you attended Loyola University Chicago previously, you do not need to request transcripts, we have them on record. Copies of transcripts or transcripts not received in a sealed envelope from the university are considered unofficial. If you attended Loyola University Chicago previously, you do not need to request transcripts. We strongly encourage electronic submission of documents. Official transcripts should show a GPA of 3.0 or higher. In exceptional cases, applicants whose undergraduate GPA is below 3.0 may be admitted.
