The Art Education emphasis aims to cultivate thoughtful, knowledgeable, and compassionate artists equipped with both creative and interpersonal skills for teaching visual arts in California's educational institutions.
This Arts Education Emphasis offers students comprehensive foundational and advanced arts training to meet the varied requirements of learners across California's public school system. The curriculum encompasses creative production in diverse mediums including two-dimensional and three-dimensional art, fine arts, crafts, design, and innovative genres. Students also gain grounding in art history along with developmental and aesthetic theories, enriching their creative practice and enabling them to engage with broader arts education discussions and community initiatives.
While fostering individual achievement in coursework and art education principles, the program equally highlights each student's social and creative influence - supporting peers within the program, guiding practicum students, and advancing social justice in wider communities.
Learning Outcomes
By their final year, students will assemble a teaching portfolio and exhibition-ready artwork collection. They'll exhibit professional competence in creating and promoting their art, demonstrate awareness of art's role in societal transformation, and gain practical experience initiating community art projects. Graduates will showcase their artistic voice through senior exhibitions and prove through their teaching portfolios that they possess the expertise, abilities, and mindset of impactful art educators committed to addressing social concerns and improving California's public schools.
