LMU's journalism program blends the Jesuit and Marymount educational philosophies with the English department's creative and analytical approaches to address the evolving landscape of global media. Students receive practical training from seasoned instructors in reporting, writing, editing, and multimedia skills across various platforms, equipping them to thoughtfully analyze news and pursue careers in journalism.
We're dedicated to sharing impactful narratives. The program emphasizes experiential learning through real-world projects that link students with communities and individuals whose experiences shed light on significant social, political, cultural, and ethical matters. It spans multiple disciplines, integrating training in film, television, photography, radio, digital platforms, and emerging media formats. Ethics form a core component, covering both professional standards and broader questions about fair representation.
Students may enter the program as freshmen or switch to it later. The initial years focus on journalism fundamentals and literary skills through core English classes, while junior and senior years emphasize digital storytelling tools and critical examination of journalistic ethics. Practical experience through internships or campus media involvement is mandatory for graduation.
