LMU's Chicana/o Studies program equips students to explore the distinctive impact of Mexican-American communities and other Latino populations in the U.S. This interdisciplinary major delves into the experiences, historical narratives, and cultural expressions of people of Mexican descent and other Latin American backgrounds residing in the United States. The curriculum emphasizes historical research, cultural anthropology, political analysis, literary studies, alongside feminist perspectives and visual/media examinations.
Established over four decades ago during the Civil Rights era, LMU's Chicana/o Studies program has grown into a respected academic discipline. The field holds particular relevance in Los Angeles, where Chicano and Latino communities have played a vital historical and ongoing role.
Students in this program explore the transformative political and social movements that have shaped Chicano and Latino influence across American society.
The major employs diverse analytical approaches from humanities, sciences, and social sciences to examine Latin American diasporas. Students engage with contemporary theories, research methods, and key developments that define this dynamic field.
Coursework prepares graduates to thrive in and enrich our multicultural society. The program offers classes across multiple disciplines including political systems, historical studies, cultural anthropology, visual media, and Chicano literary traditions. Students also gain practical experience through Los Angeles-based fieldwork, collaborating with civic institutions, community organizations, and faith-based groups.
