The Department's research initiatives have expanded considerably in the past decade. Faculty in Mechanical and Industrial Engineering, bringing substantial academic and industry expertise, provide advanced research and graduate education opportunities supported by research assistantships, teaching positions, or fellowships. Externally funded research spending has consistently reached $3.5 to $4.5 million annually over the past five years.
Mechanical Engineering professors cover diverse specializations, from foundational fields like mechanical systems (design & control), materials science & engineering, and thermal-fluid dynamics to emerging areas like micro/nano-system development and molecular engineering. Their research primarily focuses on Energy, Materials & Manufacturing, Aerospace, and Bio-Technology applications, supported by federal agencies (NSF, NASA, DoD, DoE, NIH), state entities (Louisiana Board of Regents), national labs, and private industries. Faculty collaborate closely with graduate students on projects spanning conventional and innovative domains, involving experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches. Students can tailor their curriculum from mechanical engineering and interdisciplinary offerings with guidance from advisory committees. The department provides access to state-of-the-art labs, equipment, and comprehensive computing resources across LSU's campus. Graduates pursue careers in industry, academia, government agencies, and private organizations.
