The Department of Geology & Geophysics provides a comprehensive graduate program covering various earth science disciplines. Specializations range from biostratigraphy and environmental geology to tectonics and sedimentology. With around 21 faculty members, the department supports 23 doctoral students, 21 master's candidates, and 44 undergraduate majors. LSU's geology and geophysics graduate program blends structured coursework with hands-on research, addressing critical geological challenges across the U.S. and worldwide. Alumni have secured positions in academic institutions, government agencies, and private sector organizations.
The department grants an MS degree, requiring 30 credit hours and an original thesis project. This research-driven component, supervised by faculty advisors and committee members, allows students to pursue scientific inquiry while developing specialized expertise. The curriculum combines focused coursework with training in communication skills and broader geoscience concepts.
Most students finish the MS program within two academic years, often pursuing summer internships in environmental or energy sectors where this degree holds professional value. Through thesis research, communication development, and interdisciplinary learning, graduates gain essential skills for their future careers in the geosciences field.
